January 24, 2015 Meeting Minutes
The Italian-American Genealogy Group (Washington, DC Metropolitan
Area) held our quarterly meeting on January 24, 2015, at the Dolley
Madison Library, 1244 Oak Ridge Avenue, McLean, VA. We had a nice turnout with
10 members and guest in attendance.
The meeting started a little after 10 a.m. The scheduled speaker,
Dr. Thomas H. Shawker, was unable to attend, due to death of his wife.
Our long-time member, Joe Guirreri, had recently returned from his
October trip to Italy and Sicily with his daughter. He delivered a helpful
presentation called: Genealogy Trip
Planning and Lessons Learned.
His slide presentation used photographs from his two-week long
trip. It showed the places they visited, the people they met, and some of the
additional family data he researched. The value of Joe’s presentation were the
lessons learned in being well prepared by using Emails and Facebook to
establish contacts well in advance of the trip. The presentation contained many
details for planning a research trip.
Anyone contemplating an overseas trip to do genealogy research can
contact Joe about how to go about planning and preparing for their visit. He
has offered to send copies of his presentation and talk to people planning a

The remaining time was spent sharing our genealogy research
accomplishments and experiences.
After our meeting some of the group went to lunch at a local Italian
restaurant.

Our next meeting is
tentatively planned for a Saturday morning in April when we can reserve a room
either at the Dolley Madison Library in McLean, or the Westover Library in Arlington. Verify the actual date, time

Our meetings
run from 10 am until about 12:30 pm. After our meetings everyone is welcome to
join us for lunch at a local restaurant
